This is Why You May Not Be Able To Work From Home

Stressed, worn out, tired and frustrated, if that’s how you would describe your journey to you JOB today and you’re reading this post in a crowded office, inside a tiny windowless cubicle, surrounded by irritating sounds and voices just dreading the commute home, you’re not alonerat race

Even though advances in technology allow many to work in telecommute capacities from remote locations, there are still many in the situation described above. In fact, the majority in the workforce today are still stuck in that kind of work environment. So the next question you may be asking is why?

Why are so many still wasting what could be productive hours stuck commuting in rush hour traffic?  Why do they have to waste money on gas and put needless wear and tear on their vehicles, pay huge tolls or get squashed and crammed into seats on mass transit and pay fare increases at every turn?

National statistics show that remote workers are more productive, take fewer sick days and have a more pleasing and quieter work environment than those still stuck in the corporate rat race.

Many business owners predict that by 2022 more than 50% of their now office based employees will be working in a telecommute capacity out of their home office. Many think that 20 years from now commuting will be a thing of the past.

However, if you are still reading in that tiny, cramped cubicle, you may be wondering if the dream of working from your home office will ever be a reality for you. Why are some employers holding back from this concept?

No trust, sad but true, most employers do not trust their employees. While most would never admit it, that is why they will not embrace the remote work lifestyle. Some managers like the power they feel running their little empire where they can see their worker bees right in front of them. Employees out of sight for these managers means a lack of control. In reality it is due to their incompetent management skills and lack of knowledge about how to manage a remote workforce.

This fear of not being in control is worse at smaller companies.  Even though they have a more intimate and friendly relationship with their employees they feel if they are trekking in to work so should the office staff.

The lack of trust transfers over to the employees because almost half believe their performance is based on how much time they spend in the office and not what they are ultimately delivering. They worry if they are not in the main cubicle maze filled arena they will be forgotten and lose the chance to promote in the company.  They have a need to be seen and feel working in a remote location would not show their level of commitment to their employer.

Many employees would accept a pay cut for the option of working from a home office. Nearly 1/3 of corporate employees would accept a pay cut or decrease in vacation time if they had the ability to work from home.  However, many do not want to telecommute exclusively because that makes them feel socially isolated. They crave contact with co workers and sometimes feel that family interruptions could affect their performance negatively.

Working remotely like anything else is not a perfect fit for everyone.  Not all jobs can be done from home either. Correction officers, doctors, nurses, janitorial staff, landscapers, cab drivers, bus drivers, train engineers, plumbers, electricians and domestic help, etc will usually not have a telecommute option.

Then there is the face to face aspect that some managers feel is imperative for their business.  Sure there are virtual offices  Skype, slack and other technology to facilitate team work and one on one meetings, but sometimes there is a need for  physical interaction that’s missing from the virtual world.

Depending on the kind of technology needed the cost could be a large part of why some small companies cannot embrace the telecommuting culture. However some small companies realize big savings with remote workers and can reduce their overhead costs considerably.

I have been working remotely for almost a decade and I love it.  I cannot imagine going back to the corporate rat race.  I utilize technology that allows me interaction and conversation with coworkers and partners, ability to meet with clients all from the comfort of my home office.

Top Time Management Tips For Work From Home Moms

Time-Management-Tips-Moms4TheWinWe all have the same 24 hours in a day, the difference is how we use those hours.  I teach time management skills to marketing professionals and I want to share some great tips you can implement today that will make you more productive.

1. Use a To-Do List-write it down and make it happen.  A to-do list is essential to keep your tasks in front of you.  Whether it’s a pen and paper or an App, the important thing is that it works for you and you use it!

2. Batch your errands With a to-do list you will be able to see quickly what errands you have and how many you can batch together.  For instance let’s look at two examples:

You go to the post office and the bank and drive home.  After getting a cup of coffee you remember you have to drop off tax forms at the accountant, so back into town to do that.  Get home and make lunch then remember you have to drop off your suit for the networking event next week at the cleaners, so…

Not too efficient right?

When you have your tasks clearly in front of you, you would clearly see that you could have batched all four of the above errands and taken care of them in one trip which would have saved you time, gas and increased your productivity.

3. Learn to Overcome Procrastination-There are 4 simple reasons that we procrastinate:

  • Difficult-we tell ourselves the task is too hard.
  •  Time Consuming-It will take too much time to do.
  •  Lack of Knowledge–we worry that we do not have the knowledge or skills to complete the task.
  • Fear-fear of doing it wrong and having others ridicule our efforts.

We can overcome the above reasons by just telling ourselves the opposite.

  • It is not that difficult.
  • It won’t take that much time.
  • I know what I am doing and anything I need to know I can learn while completing the task.
  • Others are so busy with their own lives and problems they are not going to even be concerned about what I am doing.

4. Delegate whenever possible-When something is not essential and you can delegate to someone who can do it 80% as well as you, delegate it.  It will free you up to concentrate on the most important tasks that you need to reach your goals.

5. Get rid of distractions-turn off social media and alerts, turn off your phone, set aside the time you need for a task and work until finished. Reward yourself for staying on task and completing it.

6. Take care of yourself-eat right, get enough sleep and exercise.  Take breaks and time to recharge your batteries during large projects and come back revitalized.

7.Prioritize your tasks so that you are working on the things that really matter, the tasks that are bringing you to your long-term goals.  You will always have things that are undone but you can roll those over to the next day.  When you prioritize you will ensure that your most critical tasks are complete.

8. Write down your goals, having clearly written goals keeps you on track.  With you goals in front of you it will help you to focus on what matters.

Balancing Kids and Your Career

Multitasking

I’m a mom who has the ability to work from home and I really feel blessed that I can.  I’m able to do so much more for my family and kids then when I worked a corporate job with a commute and having to spend the entire workday in my office.  However no one said working from home does not have challenges because it certainly does.

Balancing a career and kids is challenging and it doesn’t matter if they are home or in school, you will feel yourself up on that tightrope a lot.  Here are some ways you can make things easier:

Don’t accept the guilt–Studies show children with working moms grow up well-adjusted and they are on average higher academic achievers and less likely to suffer from depression and anxiety later in life compared to peers who had moms that did not work.

Have a Plan–If you are just going back to work whether from home or out in the corporate world, you need to have plans in place for child care, after school activities, back up plans for snow days and sick days and a support person you can call for any of the unplanned situations that occur with kids.

Have a Flexible Workplace-This is why I love working from home and being able to create my own hours to work around things that I need to do.  I can volunteer at my children’s school, go on field trips, take time off when I want or need to and that gives me such peace of mind.  I think it is what makes all of what I do possible.

Make sure your children get enough sleep-Getting enough rest is important for children, too. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children between the ages of 1 and 10 get between 10 and 13 hours of sleep each night. In addition, evidence suggests that young children who get less than 7.5 hours of sleep at night are at increased risk for being overweight and experiencing anxiety, depression and learning problems as adolescents.

Lose your expectations or at least adjust them-If something is not working change it and understand that there is no perfection and you don’t have to be perfect.  Learn to roll with it and you will be a lot happier.  Understand things usually end up working for the best even when they are not going how you intended.

Schedule in family fun time– Make sure to schedule time for fun and family events and don’t let anything make you miss them.  The break is good for everyone and you will all be a lot happier.

Kick Perfection to the curb-Don’t hold yourself to perfection or feel you need to be perfect because you are just going to be miserable trying to keep up with that agenda.  Instead cut yourself slack and know that your best is good enough and life comes in stages so what may be a hurdle now with your kids and your career will pass and other hurdles will come but you will be constantly growing and evolving and things have a way of falling into place even if they are not perfect.  Good enough is okay!

If you are looking for a more flexible career, something that will allow you the ability to work from a home office while earning a corporate level income, we can help.  Contact us today to learn about career options that will have you less stressed and spending more time with your family.

Winter Blues Got You Down? Telecommuting Is A Viable Option For Moms!!!

snowy commute 2

Most of the country is buried under mountains of snow, experiencing severe, bone chilling temperature blasts and dealing with kids who are home from school more than they are in.  Many school districts have used up their snow days and parents who work outside the home are scrambling to find care options for their children so they can go into work.

Wouldn’t it be nice if your commute was just down the hall?  That you wouldn’t  be in a frenzy trying to find alternate care for your child if school was cancelled?  Most of all, how would you like to not have to travel on those snow, ice-covered road ways and Arctic temperatures?

If you think it sounds great but don’t know where to begin to find something like that, we can help.  Moms 4 The Win specializes in helping moms find career opportunities where they can telecommute right from their home office via virtual offices and conference lines.

We also know moms need and want flexible schedules and time off to stay engaged and attend activities with their families.  This is not possible in conventional jobs that would not allow mom to just scurry off at 1pm to see Junior in his school play or take Sally to the dentist at 3pm.  We are focused on making the ability to do such things a priority and feel that moms that have the flexibility they need will have a better balance in their lives.

If you are suffering from a case of  the winter blahs and know you need a change, contact us via our contact form and we will get back to you right away with available options that can put that balance back in your life.

Giving Thanks For The Ability To Telecommute & Work From Home!!!

Original_Marian-Parsons-Thanksgiving-Give-Thanks-Banner-Beauty1_s4x3

Well, we are in the season of Thanksgiving.  It really has me thinking of how lucky I am to have the ability to work from my home office and build my career without a costly commute, daycare expenses, missing my children’s milestones or activities plus the freedom to work flexible hours.  I really can’t stand driving in snow and ice and when I was working in my corporate career, I had to do that.

I cannot tell you how many white knuckle rides there were to and from the office and just how many close calls.  In fact, I had a very bad accident in 2003 where I was lucky I survived.  It was a double roll over in an SUV on my way to work in the morning that was caused when my SUV hydroplaned in extreme rain conditions.  I was trapped upside down in my car and it was one of the scariest times of my life.

So I will say a Happy Thanksgiving to you all this holiday season and you can know that I will be giving thanks for the ability to commute to my coffeemaker in the morning and then to my desk.

Say No To Winter Commute

We Can Help You in Your Search for a Legitimate Work-at-Home Business!!!

In my experience of helping others find the financial freedom and flexibility working from home can bring, it never ceases to amaze me when I hear the misinformation so many people have about working from home.  First, we have those who don’t understand the concept that any credible opportunity will require work.  There are always those who feel that work at home is a vacation and maybe they will devote a couple of hours if that a week and expect to replace their income.  It is these same people I find who are skeptical about real opportunity and yet will sink a hefty sum of money into a scam that makes phony promises.  Somehow, the lies, the deception of scammers just sound more appealing than work.

If you are really looking to change your life, for whatever your reason or your “why,”  I implore you to do your due diligence when researching any opportunity.  If a company does not want to provide you with facts about their company or is asking for a hefty investment up front, you can probably be sure it is not on the up and up.

What about MLMs?  MLM opportunities are a dime a dozen.  They can be very risky, have a high percentage of failure, depend on what time you “got in” to determine if you will make any substantial income, have breakaways, require you to meet quotas in order to earn and to start from 0 every month, having you sell overpriced products to your friends and family as well as stock and inventory you may never liquidate.  Many people get involved with MLM companies over and over again hoping to find the one that works.  Lots of times they try to get in on the ground floor with a new company and that is so risky because the rate of failure of MLM companies in the first year or two is huge!  Then they can just kiss their investment good-bye and chalk up another MLM failure.

MLMs also carry a huge stigma because people have been burned and know others that have been as well.  Take the company Amway that had such a bad reputation they thought changing their name would cure that.  It didn’t, people learned it was just Amway under a different name.

So are there real businesses that are not scams and not MLMs around that you can successfully build from your home?  The answer is a resounding YES!!!  How can you tell what is a real opportunity and what is a scam?  Here are some important tips to help you in your evaluations?

1. Are they asking for an initial investment?  It is normal to have to make some kind of investment with any business venture whether working from home or not.  Uniforms, supplies, work attire, gas for commuting, self-help resources etc.  However, when you are asked to pay a substantial amount and have no guarantee of getting your money back if the opportunity is not for you, my advice is to walk away.  A legitimate company should offer you a grace period in which you can decide if the opportunity is the right fit, if not you should be given any investment made no matter how small.

2. Do they have a good support team to help you build your business.  Even with the most motivated, self-disciplined people it can be quite a change to work from home.  To be successful you really need a good mentoring team to help you, train you, coach you and just to vent to.  If the company is just interested in getting your money and then leaving you to your own resources, it is going to be tough if not impossible to be successful and will have you wondering if they are setting you up to fail.

3. Ask to see the companies credentials in print.  They should be happy to give you reports from the Better Business Bureau, and other accolades that the company has received.

Stop Dreaming and Start Working!!!

If you are dreaming of the perfect opportunity to work from home, make your own hours, be your own boss, have unlimited earning power, financial security, the ability to build your savings, pay off your debt, and have peace of mind with a willable income for your family; you need to stop dreaming and start working!

There are a lot of scams, especially on the Internet making promises of big money for very little effort.  Maybe you have been the victim of one of these scams, maybe you know someone who has, either way I bet it has made you a very skeptical person.  It’s good to be skeptical, it is important to research any work opportunity with the facts.

Are there legitimate work at home opportunities?  The answer is yes, but you need to do your homework.  The first thing I will tell you is to open your eyes and your ears.  If someone is promising you huge money for doing next to nothing, it’s 99.9% certain it’s a scam.  Any opportunity that is legitimate will require WORK.  Working from home is possible but is not for everyone.  Individuals who do not have self-discipline will not do well managing their time. Unfortunately, it is these individuals that will flounder even in a legitimate work from home position because they lack the skills needed to be accountable for their own time.  They don’t put in the effort, work or have the drive to be successful.  They will often try by just being home, and then when they are not doing well, not making money, they look for someone and something to blame other than themselves.

People like this are dangerous because they have a very poor attitude and instead of looking at the situation for what it really is.  They failed because they did not work, they transfer the blame to the company and perpetuate lies so that others will not succeed where they failed.  As long as they are dissuading others and putting the blame on the company, they do not have to accept the truth.  It is sad though that so many people who are researching work from home opportunities do not do the due diligence needed.  Many times they will  just do a search on Google and read anything that comes up and make a decision based on that.  They should make a choice to only take their information from reputable sources like the Better Business Bureau.

Another industry that has tainted work at home opportunities are the MLMs.  Multi-Level Marketing is risky, requires a hefty investment, has an unbalanced compensation plan, requires you to buy inventory, meet quotas, and many fold in their first few years leaving people in financial ruins.

So what should you do when you are trying to find out if an opportunity is legitimate?

The first thing is check with the BBB on the company.  Check with the local and National Chamber of Commerce. Examine your feelings.  Is it a company you would be proud to be working with?    How are the company’s ethics?  Do they represent something you believe in?  Is the compensation fair?  Do you have to make a risky investment?  Get the facts and make an informed decision.

Are You Listening To A Leader Or A Failure Who Wants Company?

Do you know why some great companies get a bad name?  It is because the very people who go around bad mouthing work at home legitimate businesses are disgruntled because the business was not the get rich quick scheme they wanted it to be.

Business is work, many people go searching for that magic opportunity that will get them great wealth, financial freedom, flexibility, let them be their own boss but they do not want to pay their dues.  I am not talking about putting up money, I am talking about putting in time, doing real work, real work that will pay off in spades.

I see it all the time.  Someone hears about a company, they join that company and do the bare minimum if that.  They think that it is going to be easy and they will not have to do anything, they don’t attend any optional training meetings, even if they are online and convenient, they don’t put forth the effort to be a leader. They don’t come in strong, they are the most proactive when they are making the decision but then, they sit back.  When success does not find them in a month, two months, they quit.  They lack the drive to work, they lack the drive to persevere and they give up at the first sign of any resistance.  They jump ship and then to be certain no one attributes their failure to them, they go about bad mouthing the company telling others that they are a scam, no money can be made etc.  They will do everything in their power to thwart any one else from giving it a go.  They want company because misery loves company.

It takes the right person to do their due diligence, to make the decision to work, and do just that.  Those people are the leaders, those people are the ones who go above and beyond what is required, they are the small percent that reach and surpass their greatest goals and it is done because they persevere where other bail.

Make sure you are listening to leaders and not failures when you are trying to research a business. Don’t let others keep you down because they could not make it.  Reach for the stars if you want them, enjoy the ride but don’t give up and keep on going.  If you put the time in, put the work in, keep doing it, you will see that you can make it and you can be one of the leaders that did not give up.
